Help Your household

Starting a new budget and archiving an old one

Create a new budget, switch between budgets, archive one you no longer use, and why you can't delete a budget.

A household can have more than one budget. Each budget is a complete set of envelopes of its own: its own categories, accounts, paychecks and months. Archiving hides a budget from the switcher and makes it read-only — never a delete, so there is no way to delete a budget. To start over, you create a new budget and archive the old one.

Start over with a new budget

  1. Tap the budget name at the top of the screen, then Manage budgets.
  2. Type a name under New budget, for example "2027", and tap Create budget.
  3. Tap the budget name again and pick the new budget. Its categories and envelopes start empty.
  4. Add your accounts to it (see below), or import again.

Archive the old budget

  1. Tap the budget name, then Manage budgets.
  2. Next to the old budget, tap Archive.

An archived budget disappears from the budget list, and you can still see what happened in it, but you can't change it. You can bring it back any time: under Archived in Manage budgets, tap Restore. You always keep at least one active budget, so you can't archive your only one.

Which accounts you see

Accounts lists only the accounts of the budget you're in. Each account belongs to exactly one budget, so a new budget reads "No accounts in this budget yet" until you add or connect accounts for it. The old budget's accounts are still there: switch back to that budget to see them. Once you archive a budget, its accounts are hidden along with it, and Restore brings them back.

Moving an account into the new budget

Switch to the budget that owns the account. On Accounts, open its menu and tap Move, then pick the new budget. Forward shows what changes before you confirm. The account's transactions go with it, but categories belong to a budget, so they arrive uncategorized.

What to do

To restart: Manage budgets → Create budget → switch to it → Move your accounts into it → Manage budgets → Archive the old one.
