Help Money in and out

Your income

The Income screen lists every paycheck and other regular income Forward expects, so it can plan with money before it lands.

The Income screen lists each paycheck and other regular income Forward expects: who pays it, how much and how often. Forward uses this list to plan with money before it arrives and to recognize each deposit when it lands.

Open it from the Overview: under Look ahead and back, tap Income. On a computer it is also under Views in the sidebar.

What the list shows

Each row is one income: the payer's name, then the amount and how often it comes. A household with two earners has a row for each, and someone paid on two set days a month can have one row for each day.

Example. The Riveras' Income screen has three rows:

PayerLine
Alex's employer$2,400.00 every 2 weeks
Sam's employer$1,800.00 monthly on the 1st
Sam's employer$1,800.00 monthly on the 15th

A row marked Paused names a category that has since been archived. Open it and pick a different category.

Why it matters

Income on this screen counts toward Left to assign before it arrives: received income this month + remaining expected income-Plan occurrences not yet matched, and so on. On 10/09 the Riveras have received two October paychecks ($1,800.00 + $2,400.00 = $4,200.00) and expect two more ($1,800.00 on 10/15 and $2,400.00 on 10/23, another $4,200.00). Forward counts all $8,400.00, so they can plan the whole month on day one.

Expected income is a plan, not cash. It reaches Left to fund only when the deposit arrives and you confirm it; see Confirming a paycheck.

If an income's amount changes from one payment to the next, see Income that varies.

Adding income

  1. Tap Add income.
  2. If Forward has seen regular deposits, Found in your deposits lists them, such as "Lakeside Clinic · 4 deposits". Tap one to fill in its payee, amount, how often and next payday.
  3. Otherwise pick the Payee, enter the Amount, choose a Frequency (Weekly, Every 2 weeks, Twice a month, Monthly and so on) and set Start date to the next payday.
  4. Optionally, add Funding template lines to send a set amount or percent of each paycheck to a category. Any category you don't name is filled in when the paycheck lands.
  5. Tap Save.

To change an income, tap its row. To stop one, open it and tap End this Plan. It leaves the forecast from the date you pick, and past months keep it as it was.

When deposits come in under another name

Some banks give each paycheck its own name, so a deposit can land under a different payee from the one on the Income screen. Forward only matches an income to deposits from its own payee. When it sees this, the income's Edit Plan shows a card such as "3 Lakeside Clinic deposits are under other payees. They can't match this Plan until they're under Lakeside Clinic."

What you received

Below your incomes, Received shows the deposits that came in, grouped by who paid them: one row per payer (and one per person when two of you work for the same employer), with how many deposits and their total. When you save an income, Forward starts a group for its payer and suggests each deposit that matched it. A row marked To confirm has suggestions waiting: tap it, then Confirm each one or tap Not this one.

Example. The Riveras' Received section shows Alex's employer with 6 deposits of $2,400.00 (6 × $2,400.00 = $14,400.00) and 2 to confirm. Received never changes the budget: those deposits already count as income. A deposit you haven't approved yet is in the count but not the total; the row says how many are waiting ("· 2 to approve"), and they join the total once you approve them.

What to do

If a paycheck arrived but Forward didn't recognize it as one of your incomes, so Left to assign still counts it as expected:

  1. On the Overview, tap Income and check the paycheck is listed with the right payee, amount and payday.
  2. Open it. If a card says deposits are under other payees, tap Review and group and apply it.
  3. If the paycheck isn't listed, tap Add income and add it.
